SEA SPIKES & SOFT SIDES… Dislocation Toys Debuts “Carmila” Sofubi on Kickstarter!
There’s something special when a new studio steps into the sofubi scene with a clear vision… and Dislocation Toys is doing exactly that with their debut release, Carmila. Hailing out of Rhode Island and founded by RISD alumni, Dislocation is kicking things off with a character that already feels fully realized… both visually and conceptually. Carmila is a rebellious sea urchin girl pulled from an ocean-inspired world the studio is building… covered in spikes on the outside, but protecting something softer underneath. It’s that contrast that really hits… tough shell, vulnerable core… and it translates beautifully into the sculpt.
The figure itself is a hand-painted soft vinyl release, offered as a numbered edition, with multiple colorways including a standard, metallic, and a softer pastel pink version that leans into that duality even more. The spiked head sculpt is the standout here… chaotic, defensive, and expressive all at once… paired with a more grounded, almost human outfit that gives the whole piece a ton of personality.
This isn’t just a one-off either… Carmila is the first character in a larger narrative universe Dislocation is building, which makes this debut feel like the beginning of something much bigger. The project is currently live on Kickstarter with about 20 days left in the campaign, giving collectors a chance to get in early on the ground floor of a new artist-driven sofubi line. And in a nice community-focused twist, Dislocation is also running a blank painting contest, inviting collectors and artists to put their own spin on Carmila’s form… something I always love seeing when new platforms hit the scene.
If you’re into indie sofubi, character-driven design, and supporting new studios from day one… this is definitely one to keep on your radar. Head over to the Kickstarter HERE and check it out… this is a strong debut.
