Hug the Hum... Bezzy Turns a Data Center Into a Sold-Out Plush with a Point!
Some plush toys play a lullaby when you squeeze them. Bezzy has other plans! Basura (@basuranewyork) and musician Big Data (@bigdatabigdata) have turned a data center into a fuzzy, smiling collectible that plays the piercing hum of a real facility when hugged.
Handmade in an edition of just 20, Bezzy wraps a server-rack belly in gray plush, adds long dangling arms and legs, and tops it off with a pair of wide eyes and a deceptively friendly smile. That bright yellow tag lets you know what you’re getting into... this little buddy comes with a very loud personality!
The sound was recorded by a resident living near a Virginia data center. Bezzy is part of Adopt A Data Center, a satirical project that uses the familiar language of animal adoption to invite a closer look at the impact of data centers on nearby communities and resources. Cute, uncomfortable, and clever all at once... that’s quite a trick for a stuffed server rack.
The official Big Data shop currently lists Bezzy at $125 and sold out. Each was listed with a Big Data T-shirt, with UPS shipping requiring a signature. No restock has been announced, but the project and its photos are still worth a look for collectors who like their plush with something to say.
