A Life Told Through Designer Toys: Zard Apuya’s “WIP: An Au-TOY-Biography”!

Designer toy artist Zard Apuya presents WIP: An Au-TOY-Biography, a deeply personal solo exhibition currently on view at Thumbprint Gallery in La Jolla, California. Running through March 28, 2026, the exhibition explores life, identity, and growth through Apuya’s meticulously hand-crafted designer toys, transforming the collectible toy format into a visual memoir.
The title WIP, short for Work in Progress, reflects the belief that growth and refinement are never truly complete. For Apuya, the concept extends beyond the studio and into life itself. Both art and identity evolve over time, shaped by experiences, challenges, and milestones. Through this exhibition, Apuya traces his journey from Guam to California, honoring family, heritage, ambition, and the defining moments that helped shape his creative voice.
Many of the works on view were created specifically for this exhibition and represent distinct chapters of the artist’s life. From early family influences and formative experiences to professional milestones and personal challenges, each piece captures a moment of growth. Together, the works form a chronological and emotional timeline told through designer toys, turning the gallery space into an autobiographical narrative.
While the exhibition spans multiple phases of Apuya’s life, his signature hyper-realistic food sculptures remain central to the story. Over the years, Apuya has developed a meticulous process that transforms familiar dishes and everyday snacks into striking designer toy forms. Through careful attention to texture, scale, and detail, these works blur the line between object and illusion. Food becomes more than subject matter—it becomes a visual language used to express memory, place, culture, and lived experience.
In WIP: An Au-TOY-Biography, polished works sit alongside pieces that reflect experimentation and evolution, reinforcing the idea that mastery is built through process. Each toy functions as both artifact and milestone, collectively telling a story of persistence, creativity, and identity through craft.
Since beginning his practice in 2010, Apuya has created more than 2,900 custom designer toys. His work has been exhibited nationally and is widely recognized for blending meticulous craftsmanship, cultural storytelling, and contemporary pop aesthetics. WIP: An Au-TOY-Biography is on view now through March 28, 2026 at Thumbprint Gallery, located at 920 Kline Street in La Jolla, California.
