Spanky “Bat-a-Swing” Brings Rhythm, Retro Cartoon Chaos, And A Killer Bat Toy To Kickstarter!!!
Okay... I have a soft spot for this one right out of the gate. Maybe it’s because my name is Spanky. Actually, not maybe... that is 100% part of it. But even without the name connection, Spanky “Bat-a-Swing” from Green Flamingo has all the makings of something rad. You’ve got a grumpy little bat, giant sound-blasting ears, 1930s cartoon vibes, electro swing music, rhythm-based platforming, and now a collectible figure tied into the Kickstarter campaign. That’s a whole lot of good stuff packed into one weird and wonderful package.
The game follows Spanky, a cranky bat who wakes up to the never-ending sound of music after the newly elected Mayor Metrognome turns Metronopolis into one giant nonstop party. While everyone else is blissed out and moving to the beat, Spanky just wants some peace and quiet. So what does he do? He mounts giant sound reversal cannons into his oversized ears and sets off across the city, using rhythm, sound, and a whole lot of attitude to slap his way toward the mayor’s office and shut the noise down once and for all.
The Steam page describes Spanky “Bat-a-Swing” as a 3D rhythm-based platformer inspired by classic 1930s cartoons and electro swing music, where everything in Metronopolis moves and dances to the beat. Players will explore hand-crafted levels, face enemies and traps that follow musical patterns, unlock new abilities, and take on boss battles that turn each encounter into a full-on performance. The game is being developed and published by Green Flamingo, with a free demo currently available on Steam for those who want to jump in and feel the rhythm for themselves.
Now let’s talk toy, because that’s where my collector brain really kicks in. The Spanky figure featured in the campaign brings the game’s batty hero into physical form with that slick 3D cartoon collectible look. Big pink speaker ears, mischievous grin, pig-like snout, bat wings, skinny little limbs, and that perfectly off-kilter pose... it feels like a video game mascot jumped straight out of the screen and onto the shelf. Concept art for the character comes from Leopoldo Spagna, also known as @helio_art98, while Cristina LaSpada, @cri_drawyoursword, created the 3D printing model for the figure.
There’s something really fun about seeing an indie game character get this kind of designer toy treatment. Spanky already has that old-school animation energy baked into his design, but the figure gives him a whole new kind of presence. The oversized ears as sound cannons are such a smart visual hook, and the dark bat body mixed with the bright pink inner ears makes the whole sculpt pop. It’s spooky, goofy, musical, and totally shelf-worthy. The Kickstarter campaign for Spanky “Bat-a-Swing” is live now, with the game also available to wishlist on Steam. There’s a free demo out as well, so you can try the game, check out the rhythm-platforming action, and back the campaign if this cranky little bat speaks to you. And yes, I’m rooting for this one... because any character named Spanky who hates loud parties and turns sound into a weapon already has my attention.
