Adam Saul of
Cop A Squat Toys whets our appetite with the above teaser for his forthcoming series, titled The Fumetsu. Meaning immortal or indestructable, Fumetsu (
不滅) is a Japanese work and that choice might give us some insight into who they are… Or it might be because they are being cast "in glorious Japanese Vinyl." Individually named Erewhon, Vinge, Neumann, and Kurzweil, I think these names all relate to science fiction or scientists — Erewhon was the book by Samuel Butler where the concept that machines might develop consciousness by Darwinian Selection was first hypothesized, Vinge could be author and cyberspace "creator" Vernor Vinge, Neumann might refer to digital computer conceiver John von Neumann, and Kurzweil would thus refer to transhumanism advocate Raymond "Ray" Kurzweil. Aside from this bit of conjecture, were also told the year 2045 is of importance, which is oddly enough the exact year that Kurzweil believes a technological singularity will occur, meaning intelligent machines capable of self-improvement will appear. Hmm…
