*ON SITE* Traveling Custom Yoka Show @ Black Maria Gallery on 2/18/10

Winter time can be super harsh in California, first you have those miserable nights where you can't decide if you wanna wear shorts or pants, and then the dilemma of flip-flops or shoes... now you wonder why I say these things... I don't really know*, but the opening of the traveling Custom Yoka Show @ Black Maria Gallery went down tonight and thanks to my girl Ritzy Periwinkle... we have a look first hand at what this AMAZING show had to offer...

*I remember now, in the pictures above people are outside chopping it up, gotta love the weather :-) but I digress now, the show was a great success, with a really large turnout. There were a ton of artist on hand that made it out for the show as well as Jack from Vinyl Pulse covering the event! Not to mention tonight was a special night because it was co-curator Sarah Jo's birthday (Happy b-day!)... now to the goods! If you thought he display at Designer -Con was big... there were even more custom 3" Yoka's added this time around, and it is truly an amazing thing to see this many custom art pieces in one place!

One thing that really set off the night was the attendance of some of the artists such as Scott Tolleson, George & Ayleen Gaspar, Ritzy Periwinkle, Nathan Hamill and many others not to mention a much needed taco cart parked right outside the front doors of the Black Maria Gallery, nothing like a late night snack! This really looked like an awesome show, and if you were unable to make it out, don't fret because it will be up until March 2nd and then it will be traveling around the country this year making multiple stops in states near you(Peep the schedule below).

If you would like to see all the Yoka's in one place, check out the official site HERE and you can also purchase them from there as well. A huge thanks goes out to Dov and Sarah Jo of DKE for curating such an awesome show and to Ritzy once again for snapping all the pics for SpankyStokes.com you rock!

Custom "Fire & Ice" Grabbit from Rsin

Rsinart just completed this awesome custom Grabbit for a private collector who wanted a set... so they decided on 1 fire and 1 Ice. Rsin completed the Fire Grabbit a few weeks back and had to figure a way to make the ice one just as good... he says that "I spent the past 2 weeks trying to find me something I could use on it so it wasn't just painted. Finally I decided to create a patch of Ice shards coming out its back." The two pieces do look amazing together... and it is great that they will stay this way in the collectors home! If you dig Rsin's style and you want a custom of your own hit him up via Rsinart@msn.com.

"Maneki Tora" The Lucky Tiger from Daniel Goffin

This really cool new resin sculpture from Daniel Goffin titled "Maneki Tora" is about 6.5 cm (2.5") big and has been painted with special automotive effects paint that shifts colors depending on the lighting. While the top shimmers in a beautiful golden orange the lower parts of the body range from silver, pink over blue to turquoise. Finished with beautiful high gloss coat. The box slides out and doubles as a display stand. The art is printed on a sheet of transparent paper. The black and white drawing is printed on one side while the Japanese characters for "maneki tora" are printed on the reverse side. The paper is removable so it can be flattened and displayed separately. Edition of 7. You can snag one HERE!

"Early in the development phase of analogue to digital personality transfers scientists used different types of animals in their experiments. One particularly successful test involved tigers. Ever since little tigers in form of the test subject have been a cute giveaway symbolizing strength and good luck."

"Maneki Tora" is a twist on the widely known Japanese "maneki neko" or "lucky/beckoning cat". "Tora" is the Japanese word for "tiger" and Daniel has chosen the tiger because 2010 is in the Chinese Lunar Sign of the tiger. His idea was not only to incorporate the tiger in this toy but also tell a little background story on the universe/story the revolves around his earlier resin toy.

Steam-Punk Trexi custom from Daniel Yu

Daniel Yu created an awesome custom Trexi inspired by the steampunk and punk-rebel culture, this piece is entitled steam-punk. Daniel says that this was "A representation of flamboyance and rebellion, the piece explores the underlying need for approval and acceptance that is shelled within attention-seekers". This was built on the 3" DIY Trexi platform using epoxy sculpt and acrylic paints... I absolutely love the colors and the fact that this is on such small platform makes me think that the details were sooooo hard to make, great job man!
