WHAT'S NEW

The Return of the Pointman! Futura's "New Horizons" Solo Exhibition Announced!

When the 1998 album Psyence Fiction by UNKLE dropped, I wasn't simply fascinated by the sounds that DJ Shadow and Mo'Wax owner James Lavelle created but also the overall aesthetic their packaging presented. Created by Leonard McGurr, better known to fans as Futura and formerly as Futura 2000, the cover used his "Nosferatu" (or "Pointman") character, which became synonymous with the musical act. And when a designer toy version of this creature was released, it became one of the earliest proper designer toys that caught my attention.

Now it is time for Futura, pioneer of abstract street art that had been active since the '70s, to really shine on his own. Opening on June 18th, 2016 at the Library Street Collective in Detroit, Futura's latest solo exhibition is entitled New Horizons and it will feature all the imagery that fans love McGurr's art for: gyroscopes, nebulae, and other abstracted structures as well as some of his Pointman characters. With every piece being completely new for the exhibition, McGurr is titling every work with a nod to local culture, like Shelby Yellow, Pistons, and Tiger Stripe. Not to be missed, this exhibition will be one to marvel at, I'm sure.
