Eric Wirjanata's "Things aren't getting any prettier in the neighborhood"

Eric Wirjanata of ThunderPanda shares with us today a whole slew of figures for his upcoming show titled "Things aren't getting any prettier in the neighborhood" which he says is inhabited by many-many nice creatures (and not so nice) creatures. This series will include some of his classic characters like "Lemi", "TV Nino" etc... but as you can tell the series also includes a ton of customs as well as prints of the drawings that will be exhibited and printed on canvas 840 x 110 cm. These will then be turned into exclusive giclee prints in small run which will be published by Plastic Culture.

Eric says that he got this idea for the show while he was customizing an uglydoll, and it was getting uglier :-) then he spun the idea and started thinking about the state of his own city and country and government that aren't improving, thus getting uglier little by little. Eric will not only have the custom vinyl on hand, but also prints, paper toys, plush and t-shirts! This exhibition is fully supported by Plastic Culture as a start of long term collaboration, and will take place at their store on Level One, Grand Indonesia, Jakarta on September 3rd, 2010.

"Hot Pink Fuzz" a 3 woman art show @ GRSF

Giant Robot in SF is proud to host a show featuring the amazing talent of 3 of some of the raddest crafters around, titled "Hot Pink Fuzz" is a group art show featuring new work by Miss Muju, Monyomonyo, and Snaggs. The opening reception is going to take place this Saturday, August 14, 2010 from 6:30pm - 10:00pm... so if your in or around the SF area, be sure to check it out! More about each artist below...

[GR PRESS] Miss Muju is one half of artist team Muju, based in St Ives, Cornwall, UK, who has been making and exhibiting handmade Muju Toys since 2004 alongside her partner Mr. Muju. Mandalas are a recurring theme in her work, as is the symmetry of natural forms. "I love to work in vibrant colors and create fades of color through intricate felt patterns," she explains." For the show, Miss Muju is making one giant mandala figure and a collection of much smaller characters that are connected to the felt sculpture in color and theme.

Monyomonyo is a sewing artist based in Tokyo, Japan. She has liked to sew bags since childhood, started creating plush toys in 2005, and had her first exhibition in 2007, in Ebisu, Tokyo. In addition to making gallery work, she has made costumes for dancers, collaborated with children, and made movies. With inspiration from "traveling" and "pictures and stories of festivals, ceremonies, etc.," she is making plush toys, masks, and other surprises. This will be her first American exhibition.

Seattle-based Snaggs was inspired by stuffed Nauga Monsters from the '60s to become a felt artist. Her rainbow-colored body of work, which includes "paintings," dolls, and pillows, has a retro modern style that combines the handmade quality of craft with the sensibility of clean design. For Hot Pink Fuzz, she is creating felt cereal boxes. She says, "The packaging of anything from my youth, from cereal boxes and candy to Halloween costumes, was never serious. Half the time they didn't make any sense, yet they were still effective."

"Midwestern Ghosteeez" plush figures from Matthew Ryan Sharp

Matthew Ryan Sharp aka MRS aka itskindadark just sent over some awesome news about a sweet plush figure that has been in the works for some time now! His "Midwestern Ghosteeez" were his vision, brought to life by the "Princess of Plush" Lana Crooks as she stitched and sewed these bad boys together... and after that Matthew hand painted each and every one of these plush figures which are based on his paintings & illustrations, and I feel really capture his sporadic artistic style! These stand roughly 9" x 3", come individually bagged & signed on header card, and have awesome wooden eyes! The final edition size still is still TBD, but will be under 30 pieces and are set to retail for $40 each! This first batch will be released in a pretty small run at MRS's October 15th solo show titled: "The Benefits of Exhaustion" curated by William Rupnik Gallery at Proximity in Cleveland, OH.
