WHAT'S NEW

Rokudenashiko's "Manko" vinyl vaginas available now!

In July of 2014, Japanese artist Rokudenashiko (which means "good-for-nothing girl") was arrested for the distribution of obscene material electronically, specifically sending 3D modeling data of her vagina to those who contributed to her crowd-funding campaign to construct a kayak modeled after her genitalia. The then 42-year-old cartoonist, whose real name is Megumi Igarashi, denied all charges, proclaiming that "I do not acknowledge that [what I did] is an obscenity." Unfortunately, 10 days ago, she was finally found guilty of this accusation and fined ¥400,000.

While this fine — roughly $3,650US — isn't overly substantial, the reason for it is almost comical… so much so that Igarashi wrote a memoir titled What is Obscenity?: The Story of a Good For Nothing Artist and her Pussy, the excellent cover for which I took pieces from to construct the above image (apologies to cover designer Chip Kidd). But moreover the toy lover in me immediately wondered where I could buy that vinyl figure shown on the cover!

It seems like this vinyl figure was actually produced, based on Igarashi's illustrations, and is being sold at events she is attending, like the Toronto Comic Arts Festival (detail of her display there shown below). Titled "Manko," the Japanese slang for "vagina," they appear to be available in two versions: "Pink" ($30CAD) and Glow-in-the-Dark ($40CAD). While the GID version is sold out online, the Pink Edition is available from the artist's shop for ¥2100 (approx. $19) apiece.
