Nanan1's resin recycled robotic lamps

Last time we saw the work of French artist Gaël Nanan Brienne aka Nanan1, he had created some really amazing new creations for his show "Between Three Universes" at the Annie Wable Gallery, in Lille, France. Now, he is sharing with us his latest figures dubbed "Amaterasu" which are a hybrid of a lamp and a toy... where the body is made of resin and the head is a recycled retro headlight, giving each one it's own personality... and as you can see, they are all super unique! The pieces stand about 12" tall, comes fully handpainted, and work as a lamp... SWEET! I really dig the concept of using a recycled/found object as well as creating a resin body to house that said object... it's genius and the results are fantastic!

Dust's "TeddyTank FK" custom Toy2r 8" BuneeQ revealed!

You might recall a couple of weeks back that we teased a new custom by Dust, and now we have a glorious full reveal of the piece.
This custom 8" BuneeQ has been torn apart and reassembled, but it has a rather fluid flow of look that makes mistaking this appearance for the original form quite easy. And the wee bear pilot makes the title "TeddyTank FK" so logical! This piece was made for an upcoming BuneeQ customs show at TomThrasherToys, but I sadly have no further details on the exhibit.

Lunabee x Pepe Hiller's "Woodbees" limited edition collaboration!

We previously teased about a collaboration between Lunabee and Pepe Hiller, but now the exact details have been released. Called the "Woodbees," there will be a total of 10 hand-crafted bee forms carved out of wood by Hiller and painted by Lunabee. Of the 10, nine will be 2.5" long 'worker bees' with the remaining one being a 3.5" long 'queen bee' and the complete set — the only edition ever done in this design — will be released in two waves.

The first wave, pictured above, features 5 of the worker bee figures (L-R): Daisy, Totem, Noctus, Dolly and Harley. Each one will cost $99 and be available in Lunabee's online store on May 10th at 7PM London Time. The second wave, featuring the remaining four worker bees and the queen, will be released the following week, on May 17th at 7PM London Time. The worker bees will remain $99 and the queen will cost $149.

Can you say absolutely adorably perfect wooden bee that you need to own? If so, head on over to Lunabee's store and grab one once they become available. I'm sensing an ultra-quick sellout…

JFury's custom "Killer Clowns" Kidrobot Mascots!

When we first announced the upcoming "Battle of the Mascots" customs series and that JFury would be part, it was a safe bet that his trademark clown design would be making an appearance. When it was noted that he was on 'Team Evil,' the Killer Clown theme seemed spot on. But who could've guessed they'd be carrying ice cream cones? The faces, especially those toothy grins, steal the show on his included customs, though the bloody knife held behind the back and the cold treat proffered forth are extremely nice touches. The body paints do appear a bit flat, but mostly because the faces are so expressive by comparison. And the one chase variant out of the five, featuring the long tongued clown in a straight jacket, looks to have an amazing face sculpt. Everyone involved in this series appears to be a winner so far…

"Battle of the Mascots" will be released on May 22nd as a set of 50 blind boxed customs, each costing $65. The Good Side is represented by Sekure D, Hugh Rose, AlexBreak, Fuller, and MatCanDraw, while the Evil Side consists of Don P, Commandante, Nikejerk, JFury, and JC Rivera.

*RECAP* MY LITTLE PONY Project 2012 @ Toy Art Gallery 05/05/2012

Last weekend was the opening of the "My Little Pony Project 2012" that was hosted by Toy Art Gallery... and holy crap, I was not expecting such a huge turnout. I have been to alot of show at TAG, and this by far trumped all of them. The line was wrapped around the block starting from 5pm on... even when I ended up taking off around 8:30pm... the line was still deep! Shoulder to shoulder the sidewalk was filled with kids, women, and men... not to mention the diehards who call them selves "Bronies" and "Pegasister's"... I think you get it right?!?! As you entered the gallery you were confronted with a flurry of neon bright colors and a whole plethora of 18" tall customized My Little Pony figures, most of which were pretty amazing. There were some in the show however that seems kinda rushed, but those were from other artists not involved with the Toy Art scene... rest assured though, those who represented our scene hit home runs left and right... some amazing pieces! Curated by Sweet Streets, they picked artists including: 6%DOKIDOKI, 64 Colors, Ana Bagayan, Angry Woebots, Blamo (Mikie Graham), Blythe (Junie Moon), Chikuwaemil, COPE2, DABS & MYLA, Eimi, HIME+YOU, Indie, Jillian Kate, J*RYU, Julie West, Kano, Kukula, Lisa Alisa, Luke Chueh, Madoka Kinoshita, Martin Hsu, Mark Mothersbaugh, Miso, Miss Kika, Onch Movement, Perez Hilton, Shojono Tomo, Sket One, Spank!, TOUMA and more! Oh, and on top of the 3D figures, there were a ton of 2D traditional paintings scattered throughout the gallery walls as well as a ton of MLP merchandise... Toy Art Gallery was totally transformed!

Like mentioned above, the gallery was at full capacity... which in turn made for a pretty electric environment. Tons of people came dressed up in their fancy MLP best, making it more of an eye candy exhibit... wow were there some interesting folks there, but it sure made it fun! I had no idea there was such a huge following, and I think most all the artists who attend normal TAG shows would agree with me. There were a ton of artists who were involved with the show who were able to make it out... and one of the best parts about the evening was the placement of those "red" sold dots on some pieces... one of which was on Mikie Graham's "The Enemy Within" custom, which I was really stoked to see in person. All the customized ponies will be available for sale during the run of the exhibition, ending May 26, 2012... and do note that ten percent of the sales from the MY LITTLE PONY one-of-a-kind ponies will be donated to Give Kids The World. If you are in or around the Los Angeles area, have kids, or are a MLP fan, be sure to swing by the gallery as you will be blown away by all of the work. I took a ton of photos from this event, so be sure to hit the jump to view them all.

*REVIEW* MAD's "Bent World Beats" AP vinyl series!!!

Originally created/concepted about the same time as his now released "Bent World Vandal" series, MAD has been sitting on these designs, biding his time, and now his "Bent World Beats" saw the light of day as a mini-figure series produced by Kidrobot! This is really great news as before The Pitch Music Showcase used a few of these characters in a shirt that MAD designed for them, which by the way sold for only $7 back in July of 2009! I am a HUGE fan of MAD's work so when the opportunity arose to get a full Artist Proof set of these, I jumped on it, and above you can watch the entire video of me unboxing each figure. It may be a little long, but since I did it LIVE, there is some crowd interaction which makes it fun :-) On top of the mini-Series, and unannounced to alot of people was a really cool exclusive 3 pack dubbed "2 Turntables & a Microphone" that features just that... 3” tall, two vinyl Mr. Spins and a Mr. MC in a red and gold paint variant. These Bent World Beats feature articulating arms and premium window box packaging.

The "Bent World Beats" mini-figure line is way better than I anticipated them to be, and the fact that it features 19 new characters including Mr. Spins, Da Jam, Taps, Boomer and Plugged... where comes in two versions “Studio” that are nice and clean and a “Tour” which are broken and battered... very similar to MAD's "Bent World Vandal" series where there were clean/dirty versions! Although, the OG illustrations from MAD featured other characters like the Harmonica, Sax, and VIP Pass, these did not make the cut... then again, their may be a 2nd series?!?! These are a ton of fun and fit right in with the rest of MAD's stylistic mini-figure characters such as his Bent-World Vandals, Spraycans, and BoOoya Ghost's! These have been out for some time now, but still hold up... so if you are a musician, a vinyl collector, or just a fan of cool looking toys, these are for you. You can find them at most all designer retail shops for under $10 a piece now... and I would totally recommended you doing so.

ClarkR's custom 8" Dunny for "Most Wanted" show at 1AM Gallery!

I'm a big fan of ClarkR's work, so when I heard he'd be part of the upcoming "Most Wanted: Behind The Hype" gallery show I knew I'd be dying to see his piece. Above is the teaser pic that's been circulating around, showing the cute hand-sculpted Munny biplane pilot, but now here's the full reveal:
What an absolutely stunning custom 8" Dunny. The simple blue background with cloud patterns really makes that plane pop off the form. The plain circle sun on the back of the head could've used something a bit more to it, in my opinion, but I'm not going to argue with another outstanding piece from what's constantly proving to be an outstanding show.

"Most Wanted: Behind The Hype" (more information HERE) opens on May 11th (6:30-9:30PM) and runs through June 10th at the 1AM Gallery, 1000 Howard St., San Francisco, CA 94103. Participating artists are: RunDMB, Tim "timselF" Munz, Ryan the Wheelbarrow, Ardabus Rubber, JC Rivera, Grimsheep, Nikejerk, Artmymind, Gomi, Rsinart, Lickyourelbow, Pause, Chauskoskis, Uncle, Ian Ziobrowski, Matucha, Dr Befa, Chica Terremoto, Igor Ventura, Sergio Mancini, Luihz Unreal, Nevercrew, Hugh Rose, Carson Catlin, ClarkR, Muffinman, Lily Black, Megan "Me Smithy" Smithyman, Bubo, and Chris "We Become Monsters" Moore.

MatCanDraw's custom "300 Spartan Warriors" Kidrobot Mascots!

A tiny legion of Spartan Warriors, straight out of the film 300, ready to defend their rightful home against oncoming hordes… It's another reveal for the previously posted upcoming "Battle of the Mascots." Customized by MatCanDraw, these pieces look great… the sharp line work, cloth capes, brilliant swords. Out of the five figures he made for the series, the chase variant (shown in the middle) is a tad disappointing as it is only a blood-splattered version of the regular edition, though it does include the killer six-pack abs perfectly detailed on the vinyl. Based on what we've seen, this is going to be a close call as to which side wins… though anyone that buys a pack will certainly be considered a winner. Absolutely stunning work!

Stranger Factory Presents Chet Zar, Charlie Immer & Stephan Webb!

Stranger Factory is bringing a month of macabre masterworks to you just a bit early this year… like next month. Opening June 1st, the gallery space will be hosting three separate but unified solo exhibits: "La Petite Mort," hyper-realistic fine art oil paintings with a morbid sensibility by Chet Zar; "Scuffle," which takes Charlie Immer's pop-surrealist style to exploration of damage inflicted on video game characters; and "Sinister Dexterity" uses Stephan Webb's intricately constructed bio-mechanical sculptures to focus on the expressive strangeness of hands.

All three exhibits will run simultaneously, opening on June 1st and running through July 2nd at Stranger Factory, 109 Carlisle Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87106.

Jon Walsh's "Stormies" Kickstarter Project Canceled!

The previously announced Kickstarter campaign to fund the resin cast Stormies release by Jon Walsh has been canceled by Walsh. This project had become a rather polarizing item on the Kidrobot Forums and, as per Walsh's official statement:
After speaking further with legal consult, I have decided to cancel this Kickstarter project immediately. As this project resembles too closely the property of another, it is not in good faith to continue on. What this means for you [if you backed this project,] is that no money will be collected from you when the project ends, as it would have if it went on to completion. No rewards will be given out and no pieces will be created by myself or anyone else. I appreciate all the support the project has received. It was well beyond my expectations and I am so grateful to the people who so quickly supported it in the early hours. Unfortunately at this time it is just not meant to be.
To reiterate, Walsh has decided to end the Kickstarter on his own. No money is being collected from the Kickstarter and no Stormies are being made, including if you purchased one of the customs by Nikejerk, Fuller, Ian Z (aka Ian Ziobrowski), UNCLE, JFury, Halfbad (aka Adam Pratt), Nick Curtis / Trust Pigs, Shez, or 2bitHACK. Our apologies to anyone disappointed by this turn of events.
