Stu Witter does Star Wars... and with serious style!

Last time we spotted a custom from London based artist-engineer Stu Witter, it was of the "Russian Mobster Bear" descent... and now he has chosen to embrace the force with two new custom Munny's done up as "Darth Vader" and a "Stormtrooper" made famous by the film series Star Wars! These were completed as commission pieces, and I gotta say they turned out stunning... and what a set to own! I am really amazed at the details on these two pieces... the extra accessories along the belt and chest plate along with the really stylized sculpted helmets... these are top notch no doubt! If interested in getting your own custom piece from Stu, or you just want to admire his handy work, you can find all the relevant links via his Facebook page HERE or his Fickr page HERE.

J.Shea's "A Feeling of Transience" art show at the Hellion Gallery!

Artist J.Shea is gifted at constructing wonderful sculptures — made mainly from small parts to forgotten gadgets — that are simultaneously Victorian retro and Futuristic modern. And, in one week, he's inviting you to witness he creations for yourself at the opening reception for his solo art show "A Feeling of Transience."
In the artist's own words:
This collection of artwork contains narratives that are continuously moving. Temporary and un-rooted, the subjects constantly adapt to new environments, situations, and acquaintances. Each piece evokes a momentary feeling by its nature, with the work always changing, reacting and transforming. The artist explores both the human figure and the animal form, at times morphing the two together in a unique style of mixed media.
"A Feeling of Transience" opens on Friday, April 27th with a reception starting at 6PM and the show will run through May 2nd at the Hellion Gallery, 433 3rd Ave., San Diego, CA 92101.

A custom munny with lollipops in his belly? Hmm… Yup, another piece for the upcoming "The Candy-Coated Custom Show." Entitled "Shorty Kill Pop" by artist Mr Munk, I love all the facial detail and hair lines… really makes those elements pop out of the otherwise abstract and colorful body coloring.

"The Candy-Coated Custom Show" organized by Tenacious Toys, opens on April 21st with a reception from 7 to 9PM at The London Candy Company, 1442 Lexington Ave. at 94th St., New York, NY 10128. The show will be available for viewing for two weeks after the opening night.

Brown Magic Paint Co. x Brutherford's Metallic Ice Scream Men!

Our tale begins with a man named Mando, who lives in Chicago. By day, him and his wife — Dottie — exuberantly painted everything they could get their hands on, gleefully customizing everything from shoes to luggage, iPhone cases to vintage purses, ceramics to cars. But, by night, Mando would log onto his computer and dream of Ice Scream Men, as he quietly stalked the Brutherford Industries Instagram pages. Mando would share these visions with Dottie, who would likewise instantly love them. The two were smitten with a vinyl toy. Fret not, gentle reader, for this tale ends with joy: a limited edition custom run — only 5 copies each — of Ice Scream Men in "Heavy Metal Mint" and "Stainless Steel Strawberry," metallic paints carefully hand applied by Mando and Dottie, under the guise of Brown Magic Paint Co. In fact, these pieces are available in the Brutherford Industries web shop right now, signed by everyone involved & in hand-painted packaging, for $125 each. Go forth & buy quickly, we'll still be here with the remainder of the story when you return…

So yes, Mando & Dottie (or Brown Magic Paint Co., if you prefer) had fallen madly and passionately in love with the Ice Scream Man design. The moment Brutherford placed them on the market, the duo purchased the two available colorways—vanilla and strawberry—as well as a print. When their order arrived, they felt like children on Christmas morning as they opening the package… their eyes wide in anticipation. The pair couldn't wait until the morning when they ran into their garage/studio space and started customizing one of the figures. As they were working on it, they e-mailed Brutherford work-in-progress pictures and his feedback was both encouraging and appreciated. In fact, he was so impressed with what he saw, that he commissioned the duo to paint five each of the strawberry and mint colorways.

The end result of that commission, pictured above and on sale right now, are wonderfully simple yet striking interpretations of the Ice Scream Man: the base colors and design are kept intact, but carefully applied and chosen metallic paints coat the entire piece. And after they did their metal flaked fades and blends, Mando altered the packaging for each by hand. Brown Magic Paint Co., who have been in business for a year now, live by their slogan: "Customized To Your Hearts Desires." And, based on their fantastic Ice Scream Men customs, I'd hazard to guess that's exactly when they provide.

The "Heavy Metal Mint" and "Stainless Steel Strawberry" Ice Scream Man customs are limited to 5 per colorway, signed by both partners in Brown Magic Paint Co. as well as Brutherford. Packaged in a hand-painted box, each one costs $125 and is available right now in the Brutherford online shop.

DrilOne's PLAYSAM Action Tank custom for the show at Super7!

Oh my God, I love DrilOne's "Action Tank" custom Playsam Streamliner Classic, which is for the upcoming "PLAYSAM 500" group show at Super7. Everything about this screams vintage wooden toy tank that was lovingly played with by the owner; the stress marks, the look, completely spot on. Even his addition of the extra set of wheels is just right… And maybe it's the little child in me that played with Playmobil figures, but I love that simple head.

"PLAYSAM 500" opens on April 28th at Super7, 1427 Haight St. (@ Masonic), San Francisco, CA 94117. Participating artists include: Andrew Bell, Arbito, Clayton Bailey, Dacosta!, Super Cooper Berella, Beast Brothers, Betso, Kat Brunegraff, 64 Colors, Carson Catlin, DrilOne, Tristan Eaton, Brian Flynn, George Gaspar, Paul Greenwood, Gary Ham, Greglovestoast, Nathan Hamill, Jay222, Walter “Chauskoskis” Jacott, Jryu, Jeremiah Ketner, Paul Kaiju, Aya Kakeda, Frank Kozik, Josh Herbolsheimer, Travis Lampe, Matthew Langille, Josh Mayhem, Sarah Lunabee Miskelly, Frank Mysterio, Motorbot, Ritzy Periwinkle, Plaseebo, Patricio Oliver, Task One, Dave Pressler, Reactor 88, Jason “Aka Big Money” Rodan, Jermaine Rogers, Cris Rose, Scribe, Rsin Art, Ardabus Rubber, Skinner, Bwana Spoons, John “Spanky” Stokes, Steve Talkowski, Cameron Tiede, Scott Tolleson, Vise One, Angie Vtec, Ben Walker, Adam Washburn, The Air Rat, Julie West, Kevin Winnik, Nicholas Woodworth... and many others!

timselF's Most Wanted custom Dunny: Krunkenstein!

Tim "timselF" Munz's Krunkenstein is the newest custom 3" dunny reveal for the Most Wanted Series 3 set. And I love it! The slick tuxedo dress, the horridly cute monster face, and — especially — the replacement of one of the ears with a liquor bottle! This is the one guest you certainly don't want at your wedding! Alas, it appears it will be limited to six pieces in the series… which makes the chances of getting one rather slim.

OBEY THE GIANT: Shepard Fairey biopic on Kickstarter!

"Obey The Giant" is an authorized narrative biography film (similar to The Social Network) that some RISD students are trying to fund through Kickstarter. It tells the story of Shepard Fairey's beginnings in Providence, when he himself was a student at RISD. The trailer they cut together (above) looks pretty damn good and I'd watch a full length movie done at that quality. Check it out and — if you enjoy — let's try to help them make their $30,000 goal.

Daniel "Dory" Yu's Sai Kang Warriors custom Playmobil figures!

Daniel "Dory" Yu has hand-crafted this series of five Sai Kang Warriors, each being a custom Playmobil figures. Radically re-imagined, Dory sculpted on each using epoxy putty and then painted them. Shown above, the Warriors are (left to right): collector of garbage, fogger of mosquitoes, worker of construction, welder of metal, and cutter of grass. Dory elaborates on his set thusly:
The term "sai kang", translated from chinese dialect, refers to an unpleasant and undesirable task; or in more literal terms, a shit job. This series seeks to place emphasis on the everyday blue collar worker. The blank, vacant look on each one is reflective of how society views such labourers - without an identity. I wanted to create a sense of individuality for each of the characters, a reminder that the people behind these jobs are integral towards the functioning of our social structure.
I think these figures look fantastic, so much work obviously went into making them unique and lifelike. There's no work yet if Dory is planning to sell them, but you should keep an eye on his web shop just in case the drop.
