*REVIEW* Monster Revolt! The Art of Dirty Donny

Most of you are familiar with the artwork of Dirty Donny Gillies for his custom toy work, his watch with Vannen and his Dunny's, but what most of you don't know is this dude is raw talent, who has been involved with art for longer than most of us have even been interested in it... and I had the chance, thanks to Ginko Press, to review his awesome art book titled "Monster Revolt! The Art of Dirty Donny". This book is 160 pages packed full of all the work he has done over the years, from his rock posters, to his album covers, pinstriped guitars to custom picks, custom vinyl figures and even one-off pinball machines... this book is full of visual treats!

I was seriously impressed with the quality of this book, and the way it's layed out really invites the reader to continue onto the next page... and before you know it, you have already read the entire book! One great section in the book is the Metallica section, this is rad because Donny did so much for the guys in the band... designs like album art, he covered their offices in murals and like mentioned before, he even created a one-of-a-kind pinball machine. I would totally recommend this book, which can be picked up HERE for just under $20... a steal. You can also watch the LIVE review I did posted above to get a feel for what to expect!

"Dead Red Threaded" custom Qee by Carson Catlin

Check out this awesome custom Qee made by artist Carson Catlin who created this 8″ Toyer titled "Dead Red Threaded" as an exclusive for NYCC 2011. Carson, who works as an animator/designer for digital agency called VML, tell us that he "started with drawing out his cut and thread pattern, then went to town with a dremmil and an exacto. And then to ruff up the surface I used the dremmil with a wire brush attachment... the paint dried to a consistency of a tar like substance that cause some of the thread to look more grungy... It was a happy accident." Not only did the custom turn out great, but the photos you see above really dictate the mood... great stuff! He has 3 more customs coming for NYCC... I wonder what the theme will be for those!?!? In the meantime, visit his site HERE for updates.

Custom Jesse Hernandez figure, of Jesse Hernandez

That's right folks, artist and super fan of Jesse Hernandez, Tony Gil went to the extreme and created one awesome custom of Jesse Hernandez... himself! Now we have seen a ton of custom artists try to emulate another artists style, but to go and create a custom of the artist behind the art... it's brilliant... and Tony did an amazing job capturing the essence that is Jesse by using an old "Russel" figure from the Kidrobot 'Gorillaz' series... the shirt, the tattoo, the long ponytail, the hat, the shoes... AWESOME! Tony brought this to Jesse's recent LIVE Dunny painting at the 'Artrageous' event at Aaron Brothers held, and according to Tony when he presented it to Jesse, he said “You know you're not going home with it right?” hahaha, classic! Needlesss to say, Jesse was stoked on this piece and he traded it for and original addition Ozomahtli. Tony still has one other custom 'Hernandez' figure but is planning on keeping it to himself! This actually gives me a good idea... why not make vinyl figures of artists in the scene, would you buy one?
