Luke Chueh's “Contemptorary Art” @ Corey Helford

On February 12, Corey Helford Gallery proudly presents “Contemptorary Art”, the highly-anticipated exhibition of new works by Los Angeles artist Luke Chueh. This is Luke's second solo show at this gallery space and this time around his show is going to feature sixteen paintings based on his observations, experiences and studies of the art world. Also included in this show is going to be a six foot fiberglass sculpture of his “Possessed” figure... check that thing out!!!

For the opening night reception of “Contemptorary Art”, Chueh has crafted a social experiment where the audience will become part of the exhibition. Attendees will fill in a blank bear template with their own imagery, which will remain on display as part of the four-week exhibition. Open to the public, the reception for “Contemptorary Art”, will take place on Saturday, February 12 from 7 to 10pm, and the show will be on view until March 12, 2011.

"Honoo" The Flame by Leecifer x Super7

What's been in the making for over 2 years now, Super7 has finally opened their loving arms and let Leecifer come out and play :-) Set to debut at his 2 man show with Paul Kaiju on Saturday, February 26th is Leecifer's induction to the Monster Family (his first production vinyl figure btw... yeah!!!) with his new vinyl figure called "Honoo" The Flame! Standing at a little over 4.5" tall this little guy has wood stumps for legs and enough flame to make any forest shudder! This figure looks to be another epic character in the Monster Family line... and I am sure will be greatly sought after by all fans of not only Leecifer's, but of Super7 as well!

I sat down with Leecifer and asked him how he came up with the concept for this figure, and if there was some sort of story behind it... and this is what he had to say. "The initial concept was that if you told a fireside story about any of the Monster Family critters including the Honoo (Flame) that there was a very good chance that one would appear in the fire - playing, dancing, skating on a board of flame etc. (whatever you were into) to keep prospective night terrors, weather real or imagined at bay. Protector of children, both young and old, Honoo loves a good story, a mulled beverage (cocoa, hot chocolate, sake, and mead are enjoyed with equal relish) and a warm fire. Honoos also appear in a wide range of colors and sizes depending on the nature of the story that's being told, the time of year, and what's being burned. Simple chemicals like Strontium = Red, Calcium Chloride = Orange, Sodium Nitrate = Yellow, Barium = Green, Copper Sulfate = Turquoise, Copper Chloride = Blue, Potassium = Purple, and Magnesium = White etc all summon different hued Honoos. But the story makes a difference too as regular old wood, a few pages from a trashy romance or a tale told of romance and unrequited love in the month of February can summon different shades of pink (authors note - I've NEVER called a pink one, ok well mebbe' once or twice). In fact I'm fairly certain the magic in the air from various holidays will also effect to color of the spirit called."

So does all of this mean that we are going to see many awesome colorways of this figure... you bet your bottom dollar we will! Congrats goes to Lee for getting his figure finally produced... who else is stoked for this?

Chris Ryniak's 4" Misfortune Cat vinyl test pull

Just posted up on the C&D forum is this wonderful picture above of Chris Ryniak's 4" Misfortune Cat vinyl test pull that is based on his larger 10" custom version (posted HERE) that he created for the "Reconstructing Misfortune" show last year at Munky King! It is truly amazing the sculpting work done to shrink this down... how spot on, and why does it make me giddy just looking at it?!?! Chris Ryniak stated "Having seen the sculpt (and doing a test paint on it) I can say that they nailed it. It's almost identical to the original...just 1/3 the size!" Seeing this photo means only one thing... it's really close to becoming released, and I have a feeling this figure is going to be a HUGE hit. Playge does it again... top notch work guys and I can't wait to see some paint on it!
