Toy Review Winson Ma's 1:6 Space Adam

Many times we see reviews of vinyl toys and customs but seldom do we see reviews of 1:6 toys unless of course we are talking about 3A or possibly Hot Toys Iron Man figures. I just got a new 1:6 figure in yesterday that I've been waiting for a long time to get. For those not familiar with 1:6 scale toys most times they are 12 in. figures set to equal their 1/6 counterpart. Todays review is designed by Winson Ma a popular designer from Hong Kong and produced by Hot Toys.

Winson Ma has been around the toy business for a long time. Before starting out on his own with the Ape Explorer line he worked with the popular Toy Design group Brothers Worker. Space Adam which was recently finished and released earlier this month is the latest figure from the Ape Explorer line up. These figures came in a Special Limited White Edition and a Red Colored Edition. Both versions come with a Fully articulated Ape in a space suit as well as helmet, chest mounting hardware, DNA extraction tube, a second pair of hands and a gun. The Helmets light up from the inside as well as a small lamp on the exterior, the activation switch cleverly hidden on the outside. Such attention to details on this toy are common. Every part of this design id nuanced and it shows. Now for the grading on this toy. The things I look for in a 1:6 scale figure are:

1. Articulation - how many poses can you do. Adam has 20 points of articulation

2. Balance - this is very important, as you don't want your toys diving off the shelves. Adam is one of the best balanced toys I've had. This is even more impressive given that his chest hardware for the space suit is finely sculpted but heavy. But as if this wasn't enough they supply a figure stand as well, and since there's a belt attachment with pouches supplied it's easy to hid the prongs from the waist section of the stand under the belt effectively hiding any trace of them.

3. Paint Application / accessories - finally when I get a toy or look to get one I want lots of stuff to pose the figure with. After all what fun is a fully articulated toy with great balance if he has nothing to pose with. Adam really does shine here. His head makes for great poses and the sculpt really allows him to show off the supplied gun nicely as well as the helmet either on of held against the him. The second pair of hands supplied makes for several options of how to set Adam up as well.

So to sum it up this is a great figure. The only problem I might have is finding a second one as the white versions are long sold out from most stores and the red version is quickly becoming rare as well. But for a toy that was on pre order since Oct. this isn't too bad. For those that like to hunt for toys this will be fun. I've heard some complaints from collectors about price, I think this is due to them comparing these to more popular Hot Toys licenses like Iron Man or Batman figures. While this may be true (prices for space Adam vary around $175 - 199 for the reg. red edition to $250 and up for the White Special Edition) people should realize that there are a lot lower production numbers for toys like these and as such the prices to make something of this quality will be slightly higher. Of course the real question is, is it worth it? In my opinion yes. The best test of this would be after you buy a toy would you want to get more, and I can honestly say I'm looking forward to my next Apeexplorer if not the other red edition of Space Adam...

Celsius "Overheat" revealed from Kuso Vinyl

From our last post HERE the guys over at Kuso Vinyl had only released the illustrated version of their upcoming Celsius "Overheat" design from Rotobox Vinyl, and now we are getting the full, real deal! The concept behind this design is that Celsius gets into a fight with his arch enemy, and the result... he gets pretty banged up in the process! The factory roughed up this version of Celsius by actually removing the left arm at one articulation point and added bare stripped wires coming out... FANTASTIC! They are amassing an army of them, 200 pieces to be exact, yet the release date and price are still TBD... look for these to drop in the very near future!

Harmony (Dawn Fire) / Custom Lunartik Cup of Tea by Cris Rose

Cris Rose just passed along some great info showcasing a new custom he recently completed on one of his fellow countrymen's amazing platform... the Lunartik Cup of Tea! This is his second ever completed custom on this platform and it's titled "Harmony (Dawn Fire)". Cris's custom stands 8" tall and was created using Vinyl, ABS, CNCed wood, resin, metal, acrylics and spraypaint... and is up for grabs for his newsletter subbers first (email him at cris@crisrose.co.uk), and then after 24 hours it will be HERE in his store for only $250 plus shipping! Great job man, the colors are AMAZING!

Backstory on Harmony (Dawn Fire):
"Personal Robotic Companions have always been one of the largest markets (after science and emergency services), particularly prized were those models with unique attributes or the ability to help their owner learn a new skill. Harmony was a very popular model in the early days and tho having no specific gender, many people felt she was a she. Harmony was a home companion robot that not only helped around the house, cooking and cleaning, but liked to Waltz while she did it, single handedly reviving the dance for a new generation to enjoy.

Designed to glide delicately around on her 3 wheels, most models were plug-in hybrids for the sake of low weight, able to run on both fuel cell and battery or be plugged straight into the mains. Outfitted with a discreet audio system and set of flat panel speakers that stuck out of her back as part of her "dress", Harmony was ready to Waltz at a moments notice and positively encouraged it.

In the years after Harmony's production ceased, the Waltz once again became something only the "old folks" would do. It would not be uncommon, however, to hear scratchy, tinny music coming from the other end of the hoverport platform, where an elderly widower and his Harmony were showing the kids how it used to be done."

3A Beijing Show preview... day 2

Photobucket
Yesterday we covered many of the items for the upcoming 3A art and toy show in Beijing opening on June 25th. But today we will be looking at the 1:12 scale items that will be available at the show. For those that might be just coming into collecting 3A or are just starting to take a interest 3A produces many lines of toys with many options for everyones budget. So to start off let's take a look at what they offer and do a quick breakdown on the various lines they produce.

As many people know 3A started off by producing 1:6 figures and bots. Their primary line being World War Robot or WWR for short. Robots in this line start at 12 in. and can go bigger at 14 - 18 in. so far with a look at some future versions topping the 2 ft. size. As if this wasn't enough, 3A, Ashley Wood's company also produces 1:6 scale toys from his popular Popbot world as well. Mostly seen as 1:6 figures like the Tomorrow Kings (TK) and Tomorrow Queens (TQ), they have also branched out recently with their first robot as well. Popbot for whom the series of comics are named after is a 15 in. fully articulated robot. And as if this weren't enough, 3A also produces a 1:6 line of toys for a all new original storyline that Ashley has been working on entitled Adventure Kartel. These figures include Tommy Mission, Little Shadow, Zombot and Boiler Zomb to name a few. There is also a 1:6 licensed line of 2000 A.D. figures that have started being produced this year as well. But for many the idea and cost of 1:6 toys has been out of reach. Bots of that size can quickly eat up peoples display areas. So Ashley Wood and 3A have been kind enough to create the World War Robot Portable line or WWRp for short. This line of toys marks their entry into the world of 1:12 scale toys. This means that for any toy created in WWRp it will be half the size of it's 1:6 counterpart usually around 5 - 9 inches in height. This makes for both larger collections as well as a easier price for the old wallet. So far 1:12 scale is only seen in the WWRp line though I'm sure that might change in the future, as there are already hints of 1:12 scale Popbot figures to come. 1:12 figures are sold on bambaland in packs of 4 to as high as 10 figures to a pack, and for those looking for singles there's always retail with prices in the mid $40's it's a great way to get into 3A toys.

So now that we've laid the groundwork on the scales let's look at what will be available at the Beijing show. Please remember that almost all items at the show will be highly limited and available only to attendees (with exception to the Adventure Kartel 4 pack and the Badbot Manchester edition and some books). First up on the list of 1:12 scale WWRp figures is Noir De Plume. This figure is considered by many to be something of a holy grail for 1:6 collectors as it's so rare. In fact a 1:6 version recently went for $965 on ebay. So it's great to see the 1:12 version make it's debut at the show, but as if that weren't enough there is also what appears to be a 1:12 scale DIY De Plume as well. These figures are also highly sought after and this marks the first time either of these figures will be seen by the public.

Also for sale at the Beijing show will be a DIY kitty from the Popbot line. For now this is all the 1:12 figures that we know of that will be at the show. But as with all things 3A you just have to wait and see what may happen as we never know what they might do. Tomorrow we will look at the art and books available at the shows, also look for articles on the various artist that will be attending the show as the day draws near.
