Glenn Barr Solo Show @ 323East

Glenn Barr is one of the few artists around whose "juvenilia" excites as much interest (and cash) as his most current works. If you were a regular customer at some of the better independent record, book, and magazine stores that thrived around here back in the day ... well, you know what we're talking about.

But those days are definitely back in the past. Barr is acknowledged now as one of the most accomplished painters to arise phoenix-like from Detroit's underground milieu. He's been profiled and praised in Juxtapoz and Hi Fructose; found a welcome niche in the demanding field of graphic novels; and contributed a skillful hand to animated features and videos. Bjork and Woody Woodpecker on the same resume? Not bad!

And now he'll be the focus of his first Detroit solo show in seven years. Right here where it all started. On October 28, at 6pm, 323East will give up its walls to Glenn Barr and showcase a near decade's worth of original works and prints. You'll be able to see and judge for yourself how a Detroit original has taken a unique vision of the world and made it even more colorful and dynamic.

New works and prints from the past for sale and on display @ 323East from October 28th - November 27th.

Vannen - Dirty Donny Halloween Exclusive

A HUGE thanks goes out to David from Vannen Art Watches who was kind enough to send out one of their new Halloween exclusive from Vannen and designed by Dirty Donny which is a super limited edition of only 150 pieces worldwide! The best part about this release, and because the art created for this watch was so dope, Vannen decided to throw in a little treat and make another super-limited variant known as the "Toxic Chase" color way, which is a yellow version (pics below) of the one in the review.

The Toxic Chase is so extremely limited that only 50 exist in the entire world. So that means these were "blind-bagged" so once purchased you have no clue what you are getting, and these were in a really cool orange Trick-or-Treat bag filled with Halloween goodies. These watches are really cool, and if you are a fan of any of the artists on the Vannen site, or heck if you are a fan of art in general these are a must!

Plaseebo custom will scare your pants off...

Just when you thought the creations from Plaseebo couldn't get any creepier... the boys from Plaseebo went and got invited to create some CREEPY CUSTOMS for the "Halloween Massacre" Show, curated by Ricky Wilson of VELOCITRON, opening October 30th at the Monstock Gallery in Tokyo.

CREEPY CUSTOM #1 "Specimen No.X-50U2" One of a kind / signed
Bob says that "This first piece was found on October 31st 1986, inside a rusty metal box that was buried under the floor boards of a woodshed behind a house in Springwater Arizona that was owned in the 1950's by Lt Col Hatfield, US Army Air force, who was stationed in Area 51 at the time of the incident." This piece is glow in the dark green vinyl with a paint wash, yellow cat eye inserts, two spiders and lots of icky black flies nicely stuffed in a glass canning jar. Bon apetit !

CREEPY CUSTOM #2 "Ghost Girl" One of a kind / signed
This rad custom was inspired by a Japanese tale of a thousand ghosts, and was created using a vinyl head with rooted hair on a hand cast resin Octobase with a color-changing LED unit... WOW talk about creepy!

"Creepy Crawlies" @ Instinct Gallery

One thing about trying to cover all "art" related events, sometimes things just slide through the cracks and I don't get word about them until they have already happened, and that is the case for and amazing show that took place in Des Moines, Iowa last night at Instinct Gallery titled "Creepy Crawlies". There were over 25 local and national artists working in the creepy and crawly theme, and as you can tell from the photos, they had a ton of art on hand! Some of the artists for this show included Christopher Umana, Christine Benjamin, Tyler Coey, John Stuart Berger, Butch Von Dreaux, Jason Vivona and a new Iowa monster master, D. Ryan Allen! Be sure to CLICK THROUGH for a whole photoslide show of the event and if you are in or around the area stop on by because this will be up through October 31st!
