Lou Pimentel's Brooklyn Headz @ SDCC 09

Lou Pimentel sent over some info, and a better picture of his upcoming SDCC 09 release. Lou says that the idea behind these custom "Brooklyn Headz" came to him while he was working on his Kokeshi figure for the show at the Japanese American National Museum. He says that he really enjoyed working on the head, and thought it looked cool on its own, so he wanted to create a series of just crazy funky faces. Each one of these is hand painted with oil, and the platform is a 2" diameter wooden ball, also each custom will have a hand drawn sticker on the front of its box. These are going to sell for $40 each at the Toyqube booth #4839. Lou will also have some stickers of his upcoming figure Cranston Fellows Jr. which will be $1 a piece!

Jeff Soto's new figure "The Seeker" @ SDCC 09 and video interview from "The Run Up"

"There’s always that theme of conflict, of man versus nature, and usually nature seems to win."
-Jeff Soto

Jeff Soto’s intricate paintings are built of robotic figures and sprawling, organic landscapes. As a prominent member of the Lowbrow (or Pop Surrealism) art movement, the influence of graffiti, pop culture, and comics is quickly apparent. Yet nature always remains the crux of his work, as he’s interested in the ways we are affecting our environment. Jeff Soto’s work has appeared as commissioned illustrations and in galleries throughout the United States and Europe. Watch the interview from “The Run Up,” available for the first time to the public on Walrus TV.

Also Jeff is introducing at SDCC 09 this year a new figure titled "The Seeker". He states that "I have been working on several top secret projects with Bigshot Toyworks the past couple months and this is the first of the large vinyl toys we have in the works. I'm super excited about my jump back into toys and Klim and Scott at Bigshot have been awesome." This will be on display at the Con, so be sure to stop by booth #4833 for more info.

Koalataur the Outkast • Gold Life? Jungle Life?

Alright, Huck's got a new one for ya... Koalataur the Outkast. But before you all go jumping to the obvious conclusion, Koalataur does not actually have any relation to a Koala. He was born a Liontaur (AKA a wemic, urmahlullu, lion-man) but due to the strange coloration of his fur was labeled an outcast at an early age and banished from his tribe. Koalataur being one of the nicer names he was called, it stuck, and his legend was born. Stalked for his one of a kind pelt, he is constantly on the move, alone in a land of mistrust, traveling the jungles, rooting for answers to his lonely, confused world.

Going on sale this Friday, July 24th, at Noon PDT at Huck's ebay store HERE. Each figure is signed, numbered and comes with shown accessories. Due to the nature of the materials, some differences should be expected in each figure. 10 figures in this set, $800 per figure and is limited to one figure per customer.

Angry Woebots Split Obsession interview...

Angy Woebots aka Aaron Martin from KAIMEDIA on Vimeo.

This is a great video interview with Aaron Martin aka Angry Woebots that was done through Kaimedia, and really captures the true vision of art that Woe is all about. There are some great clips of Woe customzing a gaggle of figures and the video itself is edited beautifully, with a smooth soundtrack. Check this out, you won't regret it!

Pencil fighting with Bwana Spoons... WTF!?!?!?!?

On Friday night, Bwana Spoons stopped by Super7 for the San Francisco leg of his WTF summer tour. Of course this could only mean one thing: pencil fight! Before the lead sparring commenced, Bwana signed and sketched in his new Welcome to Forest Island art book. The book is a must for fans of Bwana's art because it will give you the backstory on your favorite toys. Following an intro by Tim Biskup, there is much to be learned about the world and relationships of Bwana's characters. (Personally, I was very happy to see that one of my favorite characters, Steven the Bat, is a big fan of one of my favorite delicacies, the bagel.)

Speaking of Steven, Bwana and Super7's Brian Flynn, told me all about a palette fire at the port of Oakland that destroyed most of a shipment of the vinyl bats. Some images of the charred toys can be found in Super7 magazine, and if you've got a box from the first series lying around, give it a whiff. Apparently, you can smell the devastation. Allergic to a faint hint of smoke? A fresh batch of Stevens has been following Bwana along the WTF tour. Each stop along the 9-city tour has featured a new Steven the Bat figure with coordinated Killer colorway.

Now back to the pencil fighting. Bwana explained that this was a nod to a zine he used to make. I, too, used to make zines, but clearly this did not lead to any solid skills with a Dixon Ticonderoga. I mostly struck my opponent's knuckles and after what seemed like an eternity, much to our combined relief, he broke my pencil. I tried to assess how San Francisco ranked among the pencil-fighters of Paris and London, where WTF had been previously. Bwana said there were good matches all over, but noted that the New York stop, which was populated mainly by kids, had some of the longest matches. SF's match ended with our champion getting an original Bwana painting. It looks like LA's winner got a Steven.

Even though fighting's not my forte, I kind of won too, as Bwana kindly customized my blank Steven with a handy green Sharpie. Friday night I fell asleep looking at the new book and dreamt of Forest Island. Check it out at SDCC, Super7 and wherever fine art books by fine art toy artists are sold. Big thanks to self proclaimed "Freelance Toy Writer" Jeremy Brautman, for this awesome write up and coverage of this show, seriously thanks so much, you rock!
