Wizard Sleeve Toys - Soul School 2009 *RECAP*

SOUL SCHOOL SPECIAL ASSEMBLY #1
June 20th at Mix Ultra Lounge
(Downtown Hollywood, FL)

Wizard Sleeve Toys hosted a huge event with live art demonstrations featuring Sket-One, Pon & Shane Jessup, and local Floridians Duane Hosein & Spen-One! There was live music from Sev Statik, Rhema Soul, Pornobots & Fusik, and a live DJ Set with Haviken Hayes. The event looked popping, and from what I understand was a success and had a great turn out!

This event went off without a hitch and as you can tell from the pictures above Sket-One, Pon & Shane Jessup, killed it with some live art. If you would like to see many more pictures from the event hit up the WizardSleeveToys Flickr site HERE! Also, I would like to welcome WST to the SpankyStokes.com family as they are our newest sponsor and to say thanks they are offering up a 15% off on all orders if you enter the coupon code "IMSTOKED" upon checkout!

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES - Art Show featuring We Kill You, Joshua Barndt, Michael William Paul

Outdo your friends by getting up on the latest trend of monsters and the sinister at this month’s Art’d Gallery featuring the work of Toronto’s own We Kill You and Joshua Barndt, and NYC’s Michael William Paul. Opening on July 8th, 9:00 p.m. at Marben (488 Wellington St., Toronto, Ontario) and sponsored by Steam Whistle, this show brings you the fiendish fantasies, and disturbing realities of the three celebrated artists.

As anticipation mounts over the upcoming release of Spike Jones’ “Where the Wild Things Are”, Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”, and the next movie in the increasingly darker Harry Potter series, the world’s trend watchers are turning to the dark and monstrous for the next “big thing”. The influences of the films are being seen all over the globe from fashion to toys, television to art.

Check out this month’s Art’d brought to you by Pink Mafia and hosted by Marben to get a sneak peak at the upcoming year’s absolute obsession with monsters, the mysterious and malevolence via the art of:

We Kill You – Recently featured on WGSN (the world’s leading fashion and style forecaster) WKY art, clothing and toys revolve around a world of monsters juxtaposed against bright geometry and pattern, for a pleasing clash of colour, kiddie, and monstrosity.

Joshua Barndt – Joshua is a Toronto based painter, installation artist, and curator whose personal work plunges us into a dark dystopian landscape of dramatic images and clandestine waste.

Michael William Paul – Michael is a photographer and filmmaker who represents a variety of genres - whether defined in fantasy and fiction or reflecting the social realities around us - whose work ranges from commercial & editorial to celebrity and political portraiture and international reportage assignments.

Despite their different styles, the artists’ work will be brought together for a month, united by their unique interpretations of darker topics - be they man or monster - for a compelling and unforgettable show.

"Thrown" Yo-Yo art exhibit

"Thrown" is an exhibit of yo-yo related artwork, created entirely by yo-yo players!

Ink drawings, paintings, airbrush, silkscreen, customized yo-yos, and plenty more from a motley assemblage of yo-yo players young and old will take over the Shoparooni Annex.

Yo-Yos are a creative endeavour that is generally abandoned with youth. Through this assemblage of works from adults and young adults who never stopped playing, we hope to present the art of yo-yo play as seen through the eyes of the people who never gave it up. Also, there will be beer. Honestly a Yo-Yo show, how cool is that, and I am into the name for the show "Thrown" AWESOME!

Participating artists include:

Walrus TV Artist Feature: WK Interact

"The exciting thing for me, it’s not the final piece—it’s where I’m going to put the piece…like the street and what’s interactive with what’s surrounding me".
-WK Interact

New York based street artist WK Interact’s work is inspired by the concepts of movement, gesture, and place. His site-specific pieces have garnered notoriety through the obvious concern for spatial context with which he approaches each location and through his fluid depictions of figures in motion. Blurring lines between street art, fine art, and design, WK Interact has exhibited in galleries internationally and collaborated with brands such as Nike, Adidas, and BMW. Watch the interview from “The Run Up,” available for the first time to the public for free, on Walrus TV.

"Project After Dark" - Pascagoula Alien by Michael Lau x Prodip

Michael Lau x Prodip "Project After Dark"
Pascagoula Alien

On the night of October 10, 1973, there was a UFO sighting by fifteen different witnesses who saw a strange, unknown object fly over a housing project in St. Tammany Parish, New Orleans, Louisiana. Two of the witnesses were policeman. This sighting would only be the beginning of what was to occur the next night on the nearby Pascagoula River.

While they sat stunned, looking at the weird flying machine, a door opened in the UFO, and to their utter amazement, three beings of unknown origin began to float toward the two. The beings did have legs, but did not use them-they literally floated across the water toward Hickson and Parker. The two fishermen would later attempt to describe what the beings looked like "... about five feet tall, had bullet-shaped heads without necks, slits for mouths, and where their noses or ears would be, they had thin, conical objects sticking out, like carrots from a snowman's head."

Based on the infamous Pascagoula alien, Michael Lau created one of his most unique figures. Co-produced by Prodip each figure features a re-moveable head which reveals an alien head. Stands approx 9 inches tall, and will retail for around $100! These look really cool, and I really am diggin on the gangliness of these figures, Lau definitely has a very discernible style and it shows up in all of his work, these were actually announced, and for sale back in 2006, and now they are once again available for purchase!

Joe Ledbetter *LIVE* broadcast via Dailydujour

On the subject of Joe Ledbetter... lets just keep it rollin. Dailydujour is excited to announce their first live video studio visit with Joe Ledbetter, this Wednesday July 1st @ 4 PM PDT! What exactly does that mean ? Basically they are going to invade Joe’s Studio for a visit. So far, pretty normal. The difference this time around is they are lugging a bunch of gear to broadcast video of the visit live @ http://www.dailydujour.com/jledvisit, as it happens. To really push the interactive possibilities, they are going to select questions from the online audience to ask Joe on the ‘air’. So if there’s something you’re curious about but haven’t gotten the chance to ask in person, this is your chance.

Expect a studio tour, a Q & A session, some brand-new project reveals, and well… the unexpected, it’s live. So if you can, set aside some time to join us on this web-fueled journey, virtually that is.
