Alex Pardee Walrus Rider: Official Release & Signing

To celebrate it’s 10th Anniversary, Upper Playground has teamed up with several artists to create vinyl figures commemorating the event. The first in the series, Alex Pardee has created the Walrus Rider, a two-faced creature, whose legs were stolen, seeking vengeance and searching for his legs atop his walrus associate. The figure is approximately 11" tall and has bendy arms and a removable tusk, which fits into the rider's hand...how cool is that!!!!

Alex Pardee wrote a poem about tales and travails of the Walrus Rider:
"Born with legs of a golden tint,
He'd walk, he'd run, he'd jump and sprint,
There's nothing much he COULDN'T do,
With legs of gold and wooden shoes,
The girls all loved his limbs and knees,
For no one else had legs like these,
But jealousy arose with some,
Cause' HE was having all the fun!
So late one night upon his slumber,
Darkness drenched with rain and thunder.
There he slept and dreamt of blondes,
But when he woke HIS LEGS WERE GONE!
Who would do this tragic thing?
What good is a bee if a bee cannot sting?
And what good is HE without legs at all?
Now he cannot move and he's not that tall!
So he hopped on the back of his bestest friend,
And together they ride as he seeks his REVENGE!"

The Walrus Rider is available in two colors: Teal and black. The teal/magenta figure is being produced in an edition of 500 pieces. A second colorway of black/green is an Upper Playground exclusive and is being produced in an edition of 113 pieces. The Upper Playground exclusive colorway is releasing on Saturday, May 30th and Alex Pardee will be at Upper Playground’s flagship San Francisco store for a signing from 12 to 2 PM. Alex Pardee is also taking a trip down to Los Angeles to do a signing at Munky King on Saturday, June 13th.

The limited black and green UP colorway of the Walrus Rider will be available exclusively at Upper Playground retail stores and online at the Upper Playground web store. Both Walrus Riders are available for pre-sale now on the Upper Playground Web Store. Limited quantities of the Walrus Rider will be available at the signing, however ordering via pre-sale is suggested.

Group Art Show at C E R A S O L I g a l l e r y

C E R A S O L I g a l l e r y presents;

JENNIFER DAVIS 'Wishing Well'
KRISTEN SCHIELE 'Pretty TV-Love'
JILL SIMONSEN 'Magic Hour'

May 16 – June 10, 2009
Opening Reception: Saturday May 16, 6-9pm

C E R A S O L I Gallery presents three artists representing a cross-section of ideas exploring our relationships with nature and each other:

JENNIFER DAVIS 'Wishing Well' in Gallery One, KRISTEN SCHIELE 'Pretty TV-Love' in Gallery Two, and JILL SIMONSEN 'Magic Hour' in Gallery Three at the Cerasoli Gallery (8530-B Washington Blvd in Culver City). Opens May 16, 2009, and remains on view through June 10, 2009. Opening reception is Saturday, May 16, from 6pm – 9pm.

In Gallery One, whimsical and folksy on the surface, Jennifer Davis’ dreamlike scenes of animal children and insect-like plants hint at the darkside of nature and the inevitable passage of time. A sagging bloom drops its last petal as summer fades to winter. Moon-faced creatures, half-animal and half-child, gather in shy circles in a clearing in the woods. A wistful girl with sagging hair ribbons balances an unexpectedly robust houseplant on her hip. Davis’ fantastic imagery is somehow familiar and, at times, sad. Her intimate works quietly capture the melancholy of evaporating daydreams and passing childhood fancy.

Print-maker, painter, and stop-animation artist, Kristen Schiele draws from a combination of influences to create her collaged, cut-out 3D shadow boxes and paintings on view in Gallery Two. Developed by a layering of silkscreen and acrylic to oil paint, Schiele’s paintings feature detailed, sculptural surfaces. Treating the stylized and erotic B-horror movies of the sixties and seventies like a giant prop-house from which to borrow items that strike her fancy, Schiele’s exaggerated scenarios feature shameless sirens who turn the tables on sexual stereotypes of weakness and victimhood while challenging outdated notions of gender.

On view in Gallery Three, inspired by how people interact with each other and our environments, Jill Simonsen renders scenes of isolation with a curious mix of excess and emptiness. Antennas fight for space on an undersized roof, ubiquitous powerlines crosshatch dusky pastel skies into plaid. In many of her works, a pale orb looks on blindly, an indistinguishable sun or moon, unblinking in the haze. Simonsen utilizes her graphic style, recognizable and inorganic imagery to create works that are both realistic and hopeful as they attempt to understand the means by which people communicate and, despite these interactions, become isolated.
