"The best thing that I like about [painting] at the moment is creating itself....The main payoff at the end of the day is knowing that I made it." -Sam Flores
Sam Flores is known for his instantly recognizable characters and he continues to carve out his place in contemporary art. In this week's edition of Walrus TV, the Sam Flores' interview from Dithers is available to the public for the first time for free. Listen in as Sam recounts how he got his start when he first came to San Francisco - all while he paints in his studio. Flores also discusses his typical day, inspiration and what his ideal painting conditions are.
In conjunction with his latest show, Ego, Addition and Other Bedtime Stories at Subliminal Projects, Sam Flores releases Dragon Tree - a print that depicts the classic struggle between light and dark. According to Sam, this girl is trying to hide the last beautiful thing left in her world. But if you look closely at the art, you will see that something sinister has just found her. The print is 12 colors, screenprinted, on 100lb cover stock and measures 18 inches tall x 18 inches wide. There is a limited run of 50, and all prints are signed and numbered. The print is available for sale at the Upper Playground Web Store.
Project Detonate has created an awesome little threesome of figures called "FOREST SICKLINGS". These Droplet customs release tomorrow and they are going to be $45.00 shipping included. A great deal for being all hand painted and numbered. PD says that the antlers are made out of sculpey, his first time using it, and needless to say not his last! They will go live tomorrow May 5th at 12pm EST, and depending how this go... he may do some more in the future.
A little story about the Forest Sicklings:
Forest Sicklings are little creatures that roam around the forest causing mischief. They are always sick and always drooling. Don't let these cute things fool you, they have a nasty bite!
These turned out awesome, and I have always enjoyed PD style...in fact when I first got into the whole vinyl scene I bought a shirt that PD did with ACityInside and released it on the KR forum...really great style. Keep up the great work dude! Don't forget to check out his store HERE!
As posted HERE before with minimal details...now we get the full scoop. Mr. Head decked out in his Mourning attire of velvet black, regal purple and steel (slightly rusted but no-one seems to mind), created by Doktor A is an edition of 20 hand painted by Doktor A himself. Each piece is also signed and numbered on the underside. These will be available soon direct from Doktor A's online store, and I am still curious if Dok is going to do this with his other Mechtorian figures, that is do some customs based on this "Mourning Attire"...would be great to see, wither way this is cool enough, and good luck to those trying to get this much sought after custom, these are going to gone in a blink of an eye.

So this past weekend, I had the opportunity to travel up to Mobius in LA for the book release and art show of "Urban Paper" an awesome artist collab/book of all kinds of great paper toy templates from around the world, and a majority of the pieces were on hand, as well as 3 out of the 4 Americans that were in the book were at the show: Brian Castleforte aka Nicebunny, Christopher Bonnette and Matt Hawkins were there signing books, and just chatting it up talking about where they see the paper toy industry going. Oh...buy the book HERE!
Be sure to watch the posted video(sorry about the aspect ratio, still new to video) because we talked with Brian and Matt directly and asked them some questions concerning the relationship between vinyl toys and paper toys, size, design, and just tried to get a feel for where they see this scene going in the future. Special thanks to my buddy Muana for the help at the show, and to all the great people and artists that came out to support a truly special art scene! More pics HERE.
