Walrus TV Artist Feature: Ricky Powell Interview
Ricky Powell. Really, what is there to be said about this legendary photographer that hasn't already been noted? His shots of New York in the 80s are timeless. His photo subjects ranged from friends on the block; to up-and-coming musicians, artists, and celebrities; to the then high-and-mighty caught around NYC. Indeed, Ricky has covered it all. Now, for the first time available to the public for free, Walrus TV provides a nine minute video from Dithers featuring the man, himself, discussing things from back in the day as well as giving insight on some of his favorite shots.
As seen in the interview, Ricky Powell loves animals, especially his cat Blackberry and he’s the founder of the well-established and long-standing “Animal Lover Posse.” In the fourth contest slated for 2009, Upper Playground is giving away a Ricky Powell photo of RUN DMC in Paris from 1987. The photo is signed by Ricky Powell, is framed and measures at 3 feet by 2 feet. To enter, all you have to do is submit a photo of an animal on the Upper Playground Facebook Fan Page – it can be anything – your pet, a pigeon on the sidewalk, a rat on the street – whatever. The person who submits the best animal photo will win the photo of Run DMC in Paris/1987. The contest is open for 2 weeks and a winner will be announced on Wednesday, May 13th. For details, rules and more information please visit the feature on UpperPlayground.com.
We Kill You - I Lose Track Of My Mind Sometimes
We Kill You - I Lose Track Of My Mind Sometimes from Nevermore Filmworks on Vimeo.
We Kill You opened his first Toronto solo show at the Gordon Daniel Gallery located at 460 Parliament Street, on Thursday, April 23rd, 2009. I was on hand with my video camera to capture the set up and the opening night party. Titled "I LOSE TRACK OF MY MIND SOMETIMES" the show showcases the most recent works from We Kill You. Everything from monster toys to paintings and portraits are available.
Personally I've been a fan of We Kill You for quite some time now. I first encountered his work about a week after I moved to Toronto. Being new to the city it was nice to see these random monster collages on walls and furniture left on the streets, it always brough a smile to my face. I'm not sure how I found out that it was We Kill You's work, but somehow I ended up tracking him down and bought one the Jurassic Park Monstre De Marais resin toys that he had out, and I was hooked.
The show does a fantastic job of showing the variety of ideas and skill sets that We Kill You possesses. I really loved the large kaleidoscope pieces with acrylic over top, which resulted in the piece casting a shadow that framed the painting with We Kill You's trademark monster characters.
If you're interested in any of the pieces see what's available HERE but don't sleep on this! The toys are moving fast, and the art isn't far behind either.
