Custom MUTT Show @ APW Gallery, NYC

Custom Mutt Show
@ APW Gallery, NYC

You read the flier right!!!! There is a custom MUTT show in the works and there is already a venue and a date...APW Gallery in New York on April 3rd.

The idea behind MUTT was to create a D.I.Y. that you could not only custom, but could custom build before you even get the toy to achieve more of what want. MUTT, appropriately named, is just that. you can mix and match any accessories giving you more options in the D.I.Y. side of things than were available before. the "shell" itself is an ambiguous shape that lends its self to go any direction you would want to take it.

MUTT is made of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) and stands 5 inches long, 3 inches tall, and 3 inches wide. the material is easily manipulated with small amounts of heat and takes paint and sculpy extremely well.

The Artist list (as of now) includes:
betso - brent nolasco - chelsea rae - crestone - drilone - FAS - hans yim - kerry lee - james yeah? - jeremy regan - lou pimentel - matthew ryan sharp - monster decay - motorbot - newkon - nasty neil - oktobot - patrick francisco - plasticme - pocketwookie - potna - project detonate - retoreject - spankystokes - squidnik - TNES - trenton matthews - tyleR - useless - willow408 ...and the list will keep growing, so stay tuned for more info and pics!

MUTT comes with a grip on accessories, and the list of these is ever expanding. If you would like to find out more info you can check out the MUTT MySpace site, or hit up tyleR(the man behind this creation) through e-mail at lethol@tmail.com. You can also see many more photos of his work here, and if you sign up on the KR forum, you can contact him directly through private message!

David Choe Signing @ Giant Robot NY

David Choe Signing
at Giant Robot NY

Giant Robot is proud to host a "Choegal" release party attended by artist David Choe. Raised on comic books, affected by street art, and inspired by crime, women, and music, Choe has developed a unique and restless style that is effortless yet meticulous and focused yet dirty. Since the artist contributed his first illustration to Giant Robot magazine in 1997, he has exhibited in solo shows around the world (at all three Giant Robot galleries as well as in Paris, Tokyo, and London) and also been featured on VBS-TV's popular Thumbs Up! series. Choegal is his first wood figure: extremely detailed, totally hand painted, and featuring a head that rotates to expose three facial expressions. This piece is strictly limited to 1,000 pieces.

From 4:00-7:00 on Saturday, January 3, 2009, Choe will be on hand to sign Choegal figures, as well as the brand new issue of Giant Robot. In addition to writing his regular column, he provided cover art and design elements found throughout the magazine.

Ron English Mini-Series????

Could it be??? Will it happen??? What is that a picture of??? All of these question I can't answer, but from the looks of it...this very well could be a mini-figure series by uber talented artist Ron English. Time will tell and things will begin to unfold, and when they do, you all will be the first to know, well actually Ron will know first, and then me and then you...hehe!

UGLY ACTION FIGURES SERIES ONE

UGLY ACTION FIGURES SERIES ONE
by: DAVID HORVATH

Don't call them urban vinyl! These are loaded with an action feature. Actually, the first series was supposed to be revealed last Toy Fair and be released today but we took too long with them. They are much more squishy than the Critterbox versions. Also 1/4th the size. But they needed that semi-squishy feel, like how real "vinyl" in mom and pop toy shops used to feel. So I held things up. Now they're good to go.

Uh but then we got very picky over packaging. The goal was "under $9.00" but the nicer paper and extra glue for high quality blind boxes was making that tricky, so we'll TRY for end of the year. If not, then NY Comic-con for sure. We can fly some in for Uglycon NYC at Giant Robot New York this December too. Oh and now the goal is $8.00.

Action waist twist! How's that for super posable?! Much like Mothman, we went for the totally insane approach and put the mandatory line right in the middle where everyone can see. This series is based on the books, so I had to capture that action stance. Sorry about the vinyls and mini-vinyls from 2005 being cut short before.

The light kind of shines through them if you really try, and that's what was so tough to get right. Most figures these days are very stiff and solidy. Still some tweaks to make but for the most part done, and we hope you have as much fun in the mud with these as we did making them.

Oh and no insanity with these.Only colors seen in plush get made into action figures. Ok, so some insanity. We're going to be kinda slow with series 2 though. Just drawing those guys now. Who should go in there? I think it should be the newer guys. Cars? Play sets? Or nothing if everyone hates these.

All this great info was jacked from David's blog...I am sure there are a ton of people excited for the release of these...they will be a great addition to anyone's vinyl collection! Great job Ugly Crew, and keep up the exceptional work!

Teddy Troop Series 3

Vinyl Toy Freaks Forum member Django posted up some awesome shots of Teddy Troops Series 3 that he found from Spade on the KR boards...haha it is kinda like you heard it from who that told you what...but these shots are awesome and really show off the great detail and precision the AdFunture teams constantly produces!

Django says:

Cases have been hitting suppliers and buyers over the Christmas period so 11 of the 12 possible variants have been unveiled.

For reasons unknown, the D*Face design/s have been shelved......rumor has it in favor of a possible 10" release instead, but we'll just have to wait n see on that one.

These all look like top notch designs, and I am really diggin the Skull variant designed by Flying Fortress...this is kinda like the transition of the Dunny that happened in Series 4 with the Huck Gee skull head...awesome stuff here!

Dok A's 8" Mechtorian Stephan Le Podd "Sweeny Podd" Asian Exclusive

Dok A has confirmed that this is the "Sweeny Podd" version, which is an Asian Exclusive. Also to note this is probably going to be a very small run edition... but nothing confirmed at this point.

So if this is going to be the shape of things to come in the whole scheme of various colorways for Doktor A's Stephan Le Podd figure by MINDstyle...then count me in. These look great and I am a huge fan of red on black, so this look AMAZING! Tell me what do you all think of this?

Dok A had this to say about the different version releases:
"So they are not strictly just different colorways. They are different versions with different hats...

My way of trying to add to the multiple release conundrum..

I have submitted a lot of versions to Mindstyle and they are test painting them all and seeing how practical they are to make. Some have been too complex to pull off. I would like to limit the total number of versions to something like 8 maximum. Bare in mind some of the editions may be real small (50 or maybe 25 only) This is decided by the company not me in the end. I will say there are 5 different hats. They are plug in so will probably be interchangeable but i don't know for sure.

As a collector myself I feel your pain on the colorways issue and am doing my best to limit the unending flood and also add interest to each new version".

Reading this from him...really sets him apart from all the other artists that try and pump out all the multiple colorways...hopefully MINDstyle follows through with his wishes, as I know some artists really have no say in the amount of different colorways the factory/producer makes.

SDCC INTERVIEW - UNKL

Photobucket

(Click to play)

When I first got into collecting vinyl toys, the Hazmapo was one of the first toys that caught my eye, and in fact it was the second piece of vinyl I bought. The guys over at UNKL (Derek & Jason) have always been super cool, and when we approached Jason to ask him if it would be cool to do a little interview...he was all in! It is really cool to hear about where they get some of their concepts for the figures that they create. Thanks so much to fellow SpankyStokes blogger Xopher for doing this audio interview for the site.

This is the fourth of five interview done at SDCC08, and I plan on posting up the last one soon. If you would like to view the past interviews, you can navigate to them on the right hand column of this site. I would like to apologize for the quality of this sound...we had no mic and it was recorded straight to an iPhone! Also don't forget about the Seven Quickfire questions below, and thanks for taking the time to read/listen to us!

Seven Quickfire Questions:
1. What is your fullname and/or nickname?
Jason Bacon

2. Where were you where born?
Menominee Michigan, but it's not where I'm from. Portland is home and has
shaped me more than any other place I've lived.

3. Who taught you the most in life?
I would say that there is no one person, but rather a different person
from every era of my life. I try and learn as much as I can from everyone I
get to know and then put it all together. Sort of a greatest hits album or a
perfect playlist of life lessons that never stops growing and changing.

4. Who is your current favorite band?
Tough to pick one, but here are my current tops: The National,
Detektivbyrån, Les Savy Fav, edIT, La Cosa Nostra

5. What's your favorite movie?
The Royal Tenenbaums

6. What's your favorite food?
Mexican, Indian, Middle eastern

7. Who would win in a fight, pirates or ninjas?
Ninja's. Pirates are too drunk, tired and hungry to get it done. Plus,
they lack any sort of higher purpose to get them through the tough times.
Even considering that there's probably a ship full of pirates versus five or
six ninja's. I'd still say ninja's for sure.

It was really awesome to meet you again Jason, and the products that UNKL puts out are still top notch. I am looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with in the future and can't wait for the "DC" SUG to release. Thanks again!

If you want to find out any more info on UNKL you can click the links. Also for more info about what the boys over at UNKL do in their spare time...i.e. their day job, check out their design consultant agency Big-Giant!

Just in time for the Holidays - 8" Chocolate Dunny

8" Chocolate Dunny
Kid Robot message board member/customizer Rusted Halo has come up with some really nice custom pieces, but this one might be his sweetest yet(hehehe, get it?). This 8" Dunny is made entirely of chocolate, talk about a stomach ache!

Rusted Halo
goes on to say:
I tried making smaller ones but my mold was half-arsed. The 8" came out good though. I used the plastic protective packaging from an 8" Dunny, melted down some Hershey's Kisses (Orange Creme) in my fondue pot, froze the two halves and then using some more melted chocolate stuck the two halves together. Then just trimmed away the excess and there ya go Chocolate Dunny. It is 100% solid. It took 4 bags of Hershey's Kisses. If you love orange cremesicles then you'll love em.

He did an awesome job on this, and what a great idea. I have seen Dunny candles before, glass Dunnys, wood Dunnys etc., but this is the first chocolate one, and it turned great!
